"HEAD OF LUIGI RICCOBONI"

Luigi Riccoboni of Modena headed the Italian
commedia dell'arte troupe that was brought to Paris
in 1716 by the Duke of Orleans. This is a preliminary
sketch for Watteau's painting Le Mezzetin, which
is also in the Museum's collection. It was probably
painted in 1718 or 1719.
